Dishwasher Not Draining? Try This Before You Call
Standing water at the bottom of the dishwasher after a cycle almost always means a blocked drain path. Two checks fix most cases — no tools needed.
Check 1: The Filter
Most dishwashers have a removable filter at the bottom of the tub, usually under the lower spray arm. Twist it out and check for food debris, a broken piece of glass, or a stuck label. Rinse it clean and put it back — this alone solves a large share of drainage complaints.
Check 2: Your Garbage Disposal
If your dishwasher drains through the garbage disposal (most under-counter installs do), and the disposal hasn't been run in a while, it can back up the shared line. Run the disposal for about 10 seconds, then re-run a rinse cycle on the dishwasher.
If Water Is Still Pooling
Once the filter is clean and the disposal line is clear, standing water that won't go away points to the drain pump or a clogged drain hose — both are repair jobs, not something to keep running cycles hoping it clears on its own. Standing water left in the tub between cycles can also start to smell and encourage mold around the door gasket.
