Dryer Not Turning On At All: Troubleshooting Steps

No lights, no hum, no sound at all when you press start — before you assume the worst, there are a few quick things worth ruling out first.

Check These First

• Is it actually plugged in and getting power? Test the outlet with another device to be sure
• Has the breaker tripped? Dryers usually run on a dedicated 240V circuit with a double-pole breaker, so check both switches, not just one
• Is the door fully closed and latched? A door switch that doesn't sense the door shut will block the dryer from starting
• For gas dryers, is the gas supply valve open?

If It's Completely Dead After All That

Once you've confirmed power and the door switch are fine and the dryer still shows zero signs of life, the most likely causes are the door switch itself failing internally, a blown thermal fuse, or a control board issue. A blown thermal fuse is often triggered by a blocked vent overheating the unit — the same vent maintenance that prevents long dry times also helps avoid this failure in the first place.
