How to Find Your Appliance's Model and Serial Number

Having your model and serial number ready before you call means a technician can bring the right part on the first visit instead of needing to come back a second time.

Where to Look, by Appliance

• Refrigerators: inside the fridge compartment on a side wall, or behind and under the crisper drawers
• Dishwashers: on the edge of the tub, visible as soon as you open the door
• Washers and dryers: behind the door on the frame, or on the back of the unit
• Ovens and ranges: inside the oven door frame, or behind a drawer at the bottom of the range

What the Two Numbers Mean

The model number identifies the exact design of the appliance — which parts fit it, which manual applies, and so on. The serial number identifies that specific unit, which matters for warranty coverage and recall lookups. You'll usually see both printed together on the same label.

If the Label Is Worn or Unreadable

Labels fade, especially on older units or ones that live somewhere humid. If yours is impossible to read, a photo of the appliance itself still helps — the brand, roughly how old it is, and the general style (French door versus top freezer, front-load versus top-load) narrows things down enough for a technician to prepare over the phone.
