Why Is My Fridge Making a Buzzing or Humming Noise?

Fridges aren't silent, so it's worth knowing which sounds are just the machine doing its job and which ones mean something's starting to wear out.

A Soft, Steady Hum Is Normal

That low background hum is the compressor and fans running — it's supposed to be there, and it'll cycle on and off throughout the day. If that's all you're hearing, there's nothing to fix.

What's Worth a Closer Look

Pay attention if the buzzing gets noticeably louder than usual, or if you're hearing a rattle rather than a hum. Rattling is often as simple as the fridge being pushed too close to the wall, with the back panel or a coil touching it — pull the fridge out a couple of inches and check for anything vibrating against the cabinet or wall. It's a free fix if that's the cause.

When It's the Condenser Fan Motor

A condenser fan motor that's starting to wear out tends to produce a louder buzz or rattle, sometimes one that changes pitch as it runs. If moving the fridge away from the wall and checking for loose panels doesn't quiet things down, and the fridge is still cooling normally, it's worth having the fan motor checked before it fails outright and cooling performance starts to suffer.
