Stove Burner Clicking But Not Lighting

That rapid clicking sound is the igniter trying to do its job. When it keeps clicking without the burner catching, the cause is usually something blocking the flame path or something wrong with the igniter itself.

Start By Checking the Burner Cap and Ports

This is the most common cause and the easiest to fix. Food debris, boil-overs, or grease can clog the small ports around the burner where the gas is supposed to escape and ignite. Lift the burner cap off, and with the stove off, clear the ports with a toothpick or a soft brush, then wipe both the cap and base dry before putting it back on and trying again.

Check Whether the Igniter Itself Is the Problem

The igniter is the small ceramic-tipped part near the burner that produces the spark. If it's dirty, wet from a recent spill, or physically cracked, it can click endlessly without ever lighting the gas. Make sure the area around it is clean and completely dry before testing again. If it still won't catch, the igniter or its spark module has likely failed and needs replacing.

When to Stop and Call Someone

If the burner clicks non-stop even with it turned off, or you smell gas at any point, don't keep troubleshooting — turn off the stove, and if you smell gas, leave the area and call a professional right away. This isn't a situation to work through on your own.
