What AF Means

AF stands for airflow, and it means the dryer's sensors have picked up that air isn't moving through the vent system the way it should be. This isn't just about drying performance — it's the dryer's way of flagging that heat and lint may be building up somewhere they shouldn't, which is a real safety concern rather than a minor annoyance.

Likely Causes

• A lint-clogged exhaust vent, by far the most common cause
• A crushed or sharply kinked vent hose behind the dryer
• A blocked or stuck exterior vent flap
• An excessively long or winding vent run that restricts airflow even when clean

What You Can Check Safely

Start with the lint trap — clean it thoroughly, since even a thin film of lint restricts airflow more than people expect. Pull the dryer out (unplugged, ideally) and look at the visible section of vent hose running from the back of the machine to the wall for kinks, crushing, or heavy lint buildup. Outside, check that the exterior vent flap opens freely and isn't blocked by debris, a bird's nest, or snow.

When to Call a Technician

If you've cleaned everything you can reach and AF still shows up, or your vent run travels through a wall, ceiling, or attic space you can't inspect yourself, get the full duct professionally cleaned. A dryer vent that stays restricted is a genuine fire-risk factor over time, not something to keep running cycles through and hope it clears on its own.
