Maytag Error Code Sud

Your Maytag washer pausing mid-cycle and flashing Sud or SUDS? It's an oversuds warning, and it's more common than you'd think.

What Sud Means

Sud (sometimes displayed as SUDS) isn't really a malfunction — it's the washer telling you it has detected more suds in the drum than it can rinse out properly. Rather than risk overflowing or leaving detergent residue in your clothes, the machine pauses and adds extra rinse cycles to clear the foam, which can make it look like something has gone wrong even though it's just doing its job.

Likely Causes

  • Using more detergent than the load actually needs
  • Using regular detergent instead of HE (high-efficiency) detergent
  • Old detergent residue built up inside the drum or dispenser drawer
  • Using bar soap, bubble bath, or other non-laundry cleaning products by mistake

What You Can Check Safely

Cut back on how much detergent you're using — HE washers need far less than older top-loading machines, and it's a common habit to overpour. Double check the bottle is labeled HE; regular detergent foams up too much in these machines and is the single biggest cause of this code. It also helps to run an empty cycle on hot water with a washer-cleaning tablet or a cup of plain white vinegar to break down any built-up residue sitting in the drum or dispenser.

When to Call a Technician

This code almost never points to a mechanical problem. If you've switched to the correct amount of HE detergent and cleaned the drum but Sud keeps showing up, it's worth having someone check that the dispenser drawer isn't clogged — but a full service call is rarely needed for this one.
