Samsung Error Code 4E

Samsung washer stuck at 4E and not filling with water? Here's what's going on and where to look first.

What 4E Means

4E tells you the washer started its fill stage but didn't sense enough water arriving within the time it expects. Rather than run a cycle without proper water, the machine pauses and displays the code so you can sort out the supply issue before continuing.

Likely Causes

  • The hot or cold shutoff valve behind the washer is closed or only partly open
  • The inlet hose is kinked or pinched somewhere behind the machine
  • The small mesh filter screen where the hose connects to the washer is clogged with sediment
  • Low water pressure coming into the house is slowing the fill below what the washer expects

What You Can Check Safely

Start behind the washer: confirm both the hot and cold shutoff valves are turned fully open, since these get bumped closed more often than people expect, especially after a move or renovation. Follow the two inlet hoses for any kinks or tight bends. If you're comfortable doing so, turn off both valves first, then disconnect a hose at the back of the washer and check the little mesh filter screen inside the connection point for grit or mineral buildup — a toothbrush and some water usually clears it. Reconnect firmly before turning the water back on.

When to Call a Technician

If both valves are fully open, the hoses are clear, and the inlet screens are clean but 4E still shows up, the water inlet valve inside the washer has likely failed and needs replacing. That part sits behind the top or rear panel and involves testing electrical components, so it's a job for a technician rather than a DIY fix.
