What 5C Means

On most Samsung refrigerators, a 5C (sometimes shown as 5C1 or 5C2) points to a problem with water flow to the ice maker. The fridge's flow sensor isn't detecting enough water moving through the line, so it stops the ice-making cycle and shows the code as a warning.

Likely Causes

• Water supply line to the fridge is only partly open or kinked
• Water filter is clogged and needs replacing
• Water line is frozen at the point it enters the freezer
• Flow sensor itself has failed and needs replacing

What You Can Check Safely

Check the shutoff valve behind or under the fridge and make sure it's fully open. Check the date on your water filter — if it's overdue, replace it. If you recently had a plumber or renovation done, confirm the water line wasn't kinked when the fridge was pushed back into place. Don't take apart the ice maker or dispenser housing yourself — those parts are easy to damage.

When to Call a Technician

If the valve is open, the filter is new, and the code still shows after resetting the fridge, the flow sensor or water line likely needs to be tested and replaced. That requires opening the back panel of the freezer, which is technician work.
